Only a Few More Days to Go...

1 more week until we start our trip, beginning in Amsterdam, where we will reside for around a month. Let me tell you we are getting extremely excited! We have quite a few interesting things we have setup to track our progress, a few new toys for the trip and a few ideas from our last trip to make this a little different.
K and I decided to stop traveling like everyone else about a year ago. We used to drag a suitcase around and stand on curbs in various cities public transportation facilities thumbing taxi's and generally being treated like cattle. Last year after a 200 miler with my buddy LeVated, my notion and idea of travel changed. Why not throw it on a backpack. And while your at it, why not try to make that backpack as light as possible.
So my fellow readers, our "lightweight urban hiking" is born (or maybe resurrected, given most people in the 1800 couldn't carry alot of stuff either, but whatever we have plastic now..). Its translation is literal, we try to figure out how to carry the least, spend the least (or close to it) for a couple, and visit as much as we can on foot and walking around. We also try to eat at the best places we can find based on sites like Trip Advisor and Zagats, etc.. but do often just go find some local suggestions. Those usually are the best.
For this trip we have gotten a Eurorail pass to go through these countries. Last year we used one and found that while it isn't the best thing to use on trips of smaller lengths, it is perfect for the larger ones. This year we also were given a 50% or so discount on a repurchase making the ticket a real deal. Anything over 20 euros is now cheaper to use our pass. Obviously the larger the better.
I'll post next about some of the gear we grabbed for our trip.
